Brief

Sutherland Shire Council (SSC) has appointed consultants, and formed a committee for the purpose of considering the possible effects of flooding in many parts of the Sutherland Shire.

These consultants have since created a computer model that combine the extremely improbable combination of events such as a 1 in 100 year storm event, extreme tides, gale force winds, totally blocked storm water drains and unrealistically high sea levels. We are very concerned that without comprehensive community resistance, SSC will adopt this study across vast areas of our shire. If this happens, the value and insurability of thousands of homes in many parts of the Sutherland Shire may be affected.

It has been identified that the primary motivation for this study is future indemnity for the SSC and their employees in the event of damage caused by water as a result of inappropriate council infrastructure and or maintenance.

Shire Floodwatch is a community group established to bring this matter to the attention of the residents. On 30th June 2010, council closes their exhibition period and with it the right for the community to respond to this study. We strongly suggest you attend our next meeting where the community will discuss this matter and talk about our plan to hold SSC to account.

Please understand the importance of community support in this matter.
